Appearing in the 1870s, some 20 years after its Smooth cousin (see below left), this dog is sometimes confused with its relative, and is in most respects the same dog in a different finish. It has generally proved the more popular of the two. A strong-willed breed, it is not inclined to yield to humans or other dogs, and is happiest when allowed to do its favourite activity – digging.
