The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen is a newcomer to the world of the American Kennel Club even though its roots go back all the way to the 16th century in Europe.
The long French name largely describes this race: Grand (big), Basset (low), Griffon (Wire), Vendeen (the French region). Vendée on the west coast of France is full of dense undergrowth, shrubs and stony fields.
This is a dog used mostly for hunting. Hunting in such areas resulted in a dog that had the appropriate hair that could withstand thorns and thickets, and short legs, which would be able to follow wild animals through bushes, but which ultimately was nimble enough to run across rocks and fallen trees without fatigue.
In England in the mid- 19th century a small Basset Griffon Vendéendebuted at the show. In France, in the fifties there was only one breed of Basset Griffon Vendéen and two varieties depending on the size.
The American Kennel Club registered the breed in 1990 year, and since then these dogs gained many new admirers for their playful expression and carefree look.
Despite its appearance, this is a very temperament dog. It is very cheerful, curious, strong dog who is always looking for fun. They like to sniff, to investigate, monitor and dig – real hunters at heart! They are also social and like to play with children and other dogs and animals, and are open-minded and friendly towards strangers.
Grand Basset Griffon Vendéenis stubborn and independent. They love to dig and bark. These dogs are ideal for hunting wild boar in the most inaccessible terrains. It is a restless animal, fast, fiery and fearless hunter by instinct, with a very subtle smell and strong bark.
The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen is an intelligent, sociable and affectionate dog. Their eyes are large and dark, with a lively expression. Ears are flexible, narrow and thin, covered with hair and low set. The tail is set quite high, thick at the base, gradually tapering and stands as a sword. The hair is long, tousled and rough, with a rich undercoat. Care about the hair involves weekly brushing and occasional arrangement of bushy fur.
