Hybrid Dog Breeds – Designer Dogs

What Are Hybrid Dog Breeds?

Hybrid dogs, also called designer dogs, are a result of breeding two different purebred dogs in order to come up with a new breed type. As hinted by their nickname, these dogs have become increasingly popular due to the fact that people are able to “design” a dog as they wish. Today, the demand for designer dogs is higher than ever, but most people don’t know much about them.

Are They Considered Real Breeds?

The AKC does not recognize hybrid dogs as individual breeds as of yet, but there are reputable breed organizations that establish regulations for breeding hybrid dogs. Since 2010, the AKC also created the mixed breed category, so that breeds such as these could participate in agility and obedience competitions despite of their ancestry.

Do Hybrid Dogs Have Less Health Ailments?

Hybrid dogs do not necessarily have less health ailments than other mixed or pure breeds, although breeders often claim otherwise. Just because a purebred Labrador Retriever and a purebred Poodle are bred, it doesn’t mean that only the positive traits from each dog will be passed on to the puppies. The Labrador’s genetic predisposition to hip and joint dysplasia could very well be passed along to the offspring, as could health conditions in the Poodle, such as cataracts and seizures.

What Should I Know Before Buying From a Breeder?

It’s very important for potential dog owners to do their research before choosing a breeder. Ask for references from potential breeders and talk to people who have bought puppies from them in the past. Ask about their dog’s health, temperament, activity level, and any other information that may be helpful in making a good decision. If you’re worried about the dog’s appearance or personality, it’s also a good idea to get a fourth generation hybrid dog, so that you know what to expect.
