Rescued from near extinction after World War II by a veterinarian, Professor Antonin Hruza of the Brno School of Veterinary Medicine, this is essentially a Hungarian Kuvasz that lives across the border in Slovakia. Its other name, Tatransky Cuvac, indicates it is also a close relative of the Polish Tatra Mountain Sheepdog. Selective breeding has made this dog a fairly reliable and affectionate companion for a family.
